Tips on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Systems
by Bill McShane
Director of Loss Prevention,
Affinia Hotels
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems can be an effective and integral part of your security program. However, if improperly used, they could, at best, be ineffective and, at worst, a significant liability. CCTV is strictly a visual assessment tool. Visual Assessment means having proper identifiable or descriptive information during or after an incident. These systems should not be used independently from other security measures. CCTV cannot notify the police about break-ins, fires or criminal activities. It merely records events as they occur, and is an enhancement to existing security. Although CCTV has many applications it also has serious limitations that may create rather than solve liability issues.

Question & Answer
Helpful Questions for Businesses Answered by HospitalityLawyer.com
Question: Is it a good idea to have a camera in our indoor pool and hot tub area? The camera is not a recordable and signs are all over the place mentioning that there is no lifeguard on duty.
Answer: Cameras are touchy because they can rarely keep an incident from occurring (even if monitored) but people argue that they give the guest a false sense of security so they let their guard down. A camera does appear to deter crime because the odds are greater that the actor will get caught (assuming that they know the camera is there). If you are using the camera to monitor the pool area while it is open and to insure that no one uses it while it is closed, those are good practices.
