Although damage estimates are still preliminary, Hurricane Katrina is already one of the most costly natural disasters in U.S. history. The images of flooding, building collapses, and fires that streamed virtually non-stop from 24 hour cable news outlets tell only part of the story of Katrina’s damage. The hospitality and gaming industries were among the hardest hit along the Gulf Coast, with many of their structures either partially or completely damaged by the storm’s fury. Now that the flood waters are receding in New Orleans and debris removal has begun at the major hotels along the Gulf Coast, important decisions need to be made which will impact the ability of owners and operators to recover their financial losses.

Training your employees on the use of Automated External Defibrillators can prove quite useful. This is what three associates at Hotel Del Coronado in California recently found out.

Dispatching Officer Victor Magana who has experience working with the Department of Homeland Security and is a Certified First Responder at Southwestern College agreed with hotel security officer Richard Eubueng and added, “Being trained with the AED machine was an asset to our valued guest. Applying a new domestic partner law to a state anti-discrimination statute for the first time, the California Supreme Court ruled that a country club discriminated against one of its members on the basis of marital status when it refused to extend spousal membership privileges to the member’s registered domestic partner.

Florida has a new law allowing the patrons of an on-premises licensed restaurant to take their unfinished bottle of wine home without violating Florida’s open container law. Florida Senate Bill 1114, which was signed by Governor Jeb Bush, became law on July 1st.
