OSHA Requirements for First Aid Kits

In the lodging industry, one of the more frequently violated OSHA mandates relates to the presence and maintenance of a first aid kit. For general industries 29 CFR 1910.151 Medical Services and First Aid is the applicable section of the law. OSHA requires "availability of medical personnel for advice and consultation on matter of "plant" health and in 1910.151(b) further requires:: "In the absence of an infirmary, clinic or hospital in near proximity to the workplace (interpreted by OSHA as within 3 or 4 minutes), which is used for the treatment of all injured employees (Remember, this does not apply to the guests or the public), a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available." We have always suggested the contents of the kit be recommended by the medical staff serving your property. Over the years OSHA has developed kits of different sizes and types. The following links will be of value in developing a kit that meets the law:
* For small office, workplace or vehicle:

* For medium-size workplaces:

* For large workplaces:

If you already have a first aid kit, it is important to maintain the contents. Please check your kit to make sure all items have an adequate quantity and are not expired. It would also be of value to verify with the appropriate website, above, that your kit is properly provisioned. |

The Secret of Improved Safety Performance

Having designed and implemented safety systems over the last several years while employed in the hotel and casino industry, I have found that there is no magic wand. There are details that some would call secrets of success, more commonly called best practices. What is needed to produce consistent improvement in safety is the creation of a safety culture that permeates all areas of the business plan. These best practices can be summed up this way: An effective safety system establishes performance standards and a means ofaccountability that is bolstered with full executive management support.
The obvious goal of any safety initiative is to reduce the occurrence of workplace accidents and the subsequent injures they produce. This can only be accomplished with full management support. A common lament among many property safety managers is that the support does not exist to level necessary to affect change. While management recognizes that reducing workplace injuries is good for business, sometimes there is not a full appreciation for the degree of impact of a successful safety initiative. Successful safety systems improve operational efficiency. That in turn has a positive impact on those elements normally associated with improving business: customer satisfaction, quality, productivity and cost control. An indisputable fact is that there is no such thing as an unsafe, efficient operation.
