Attorney Spotlight

Alejandro Antillón has been a member of Pacheco Coto’s Real Estate and Tax and Estate Planning Divisions since 1998, working jointly in these divisions in the structuring of complex real estate ventures and international tax structures.
In 2004, Mr. Antillón accepted an appointment as General Manager of Stewart Title Costa Rica, a prominent international title insurance company with extensive business in Central America. His experience in said company vastly enhanced his understanding of the Costa Rican and Central American real estate markets.
Mr. Antillón currently occupies the position of Managing Partner of the Firm, where he is incorporating his tax and real estate expertise with his experience gained in management in order to help lead the Firm. He holds a law degree from U.A.C.A in Costa Rica (1994), a Masters in International Business Law at the American University, Washington College of Law (1996), and an International Tax Law Post Graduate at Robert Kennedy College, Switzerland (2002).

FRD Discrimination.
Never Heard Of It? You Will!

A rapidly growing trend is turning heads in the realm of sex discrimination. It all began back in the 1970s when a woman sued a company for prohibiting mothers of school-aged children from applying for jobs occupied by fathers of school-aged children. The case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where the company argued that it did not discriminate because, after all, it did allow childless women to fill such positions.
The Court didn’t buy this argument, ruling that the company still discriminated against women who were mothers (Phillips v. Marietta Corp.). This was the Court’s first case involving a subset of sex discrimination now coined “family responsibility discrimination” (FRD), a type of lawsuit that we see increasing dramatically.

If you work in Human Resources, chances are you haven’t yet had an opportunity to make New Year’s resolutions. January is full of tasks such as open-enrollment for benefits and sending W-2 and 1099 forms, and you may not have had time to ponder your goals for 2006.
We’d like to suggest a few. The day-to-day tasks of managing people often consume a lot of attention, leaving little time for the types of “clean up” tasks mentioned here. But your job will be a lot less stressful if you get these things under control.
