Preparing for a Pandemic

Houston, TX

“During the last several years, I have attended the annual Hospitality Law Conference in Houston … as a lawyer focusing in retail and hospitality liability, this conference is a "must do" on my calendar. The sessions are concise and very informative; moreover, they are led by lawyers and others who know what they're talking about. There are many opportunities to meet and network with industry colleagues." – Christian Stegmaier, Shareholder, Collins & Lacy, P.C.

International health experts are warning of a deadly human influenza pandemic that might emerge from the continuing spread of the H5N1 avian flu virus (commonly referred to as “bird flu”). When it comes to addressing harassment/discrimination in the workplace, hoteliers can generally be placed in one of three broad categories. The first category includes those who understand that they work in an incredibly diverse industry and have analyzed their legal obligations, have developed a comprehensive policy, have provided appropriate training for their staff and are constantly on the watch to make sure all legal obligations are met. The second category are those employers who have a policy against discrimination/harassment, but don't conduct management and employee training and do not closely monitor the issue, choosing instead to hope costly problems don't develop. The third category are those employers who are totally unaware of their legal obligations and do not take the necessary steps to avoid potentially catastrophic results.
