In late August and early September 2005, the Gulf Coast was pummeled first by Hurricane Katrina and
then by Hurricane Rita. The hurricanes cut a wide swath, with losses spread out over a geographic
area the size of England. The first round of damage came primarily from windstorm and storm surge.
Initial damage was compounded by a range of perils, including the failure of the levees in New
Orleans, looting, contamination, and the inability to access damaged property.
The losses and the long-range implications of Katrina and Rita are
becoming clearer, although we may be years from seeing the full story.

“mixed-use hotel projects” or “condo-hotel projects” to conclude that this format of development,
with its apparent advantages to the developer, is very popular among hotel developers, particularly
in resort settings.
The mixed-use hotel-residential resort project typically involves the combination of a branded
hotel with a variety branded residential elements and resort amenities that may include a golf
course, beach or harbor, and will always include a spa, health club and tennis courts.

According to a statistic that shows up in the news day after day, 27% of Americans are obese,
and that percentage is climbing. Despite this surge in the overweight population, the law offers few
protections against discrimination based on weight. However, a federal district court recently
refused to dismiss a lawsuit brought by an obese employee under the Americans with Disabilities Act
against a national fast food chain restaurant. The case has spearheaded a growing number of lawsuits
brought by obese individuals charging that employers have wrongly refused to hire them or have
discriminated against them in other ways based on their weight.
